Korea need biofuel

Oil price is increasing day by day because now oil is going to be drained and our supply is insufficient to use in the future. Many experts are studying about alternative energy and they have found a wide range of fuels. The U.S. Department of Energy administers (EPAct) said “Alternative fuels are biodiesel electricity, ethanol, hydrogen, methanol, natural gas, and propane that are defined by the U.S.A Energy Policy Act of 1992” (n.d, para.1). Moreover, “Several emerging fuels are under development. Many of these fuels are also considered alternative fuels, which are Biobutanol, Biogas, Biomass to Liquids (BTL), Coal to Liquids (CTL), Fischer-Tropsch Diesel, Gas to Liquids (GTL), Hydrogenation-Derived Renewable Diesel (HDRD), P –series, and Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel” (U.S Department of Energy, n.d, para.2). Much alternative energy has problems because they should change net systems to fit for new energy systems, need a lot of money, and require more research and development to be realized as nuclear, coal, dam, and oil systems. However, biofuels are different from other alternative energy, because this fuel can be realized as a source and can give us many benefits. Biofuel is a renewable alternative fuel, and provides energy security, emissions, and safety benefit.

Biofuel can be produced from renewable resource of plant or animal origin. Biofuel has two kinds of material: “Bioethanol is made from sugar and starch products while biodiesel is produced from vegetable oil or animal fats” (The New Zealand Herald, 2007, para.2). Studies tell us that biofuels have positive energy balance: “The US Environment Protection Agency and the Worldwatch Institute highlight that one unit of energy input creates 1.3 units of biofuel energy output using corn, eight units of output using sugar cane and up to 36 units of output using cellulose. This compares with 0.83 units of output for one unit of fossil fuel input, which always has a negative energy balance” (Travers, 2007, para.8). In 2006 about 33 billion liters of biofuels were used around the world (Travers, 2007). Some developed countries are using biofuels and have a plan for vehicles and transportation such as Ireland, which is using biofuels (Travers, 2007), The EU has a plan to replace biofuels more than 10percent of its petrol use with biofuel in 2020 (Mandelson, 2008), and New Zealand will use biofuels for at least 3.4 per cent of total fuel sales by 2012 (The New Zealand Herald, 2007).

Korea is a small country, 98,480 sq km. We do not have oil and import oil from other countries. Korea can farm crops to get biofuels. Korea would no longer have to depend on other countries to import fuels if we could make fuels by ourselves. Biofuel has a lot of benefits. Biofuel is a domestically produced, clean-burning, renewable substitute for oil. Using biofuel improves public health and the environment, and provides safety benefits.

Koreans need biofuels, which could give us many benefits and solve many problems such as environmental, economic and technological problems.

First, environmental pollution, which is kind of big problem in Korea, can be alternated by biofuels. Especially, air pollution is the biggest problem in Seoul, the Korean capital. Many Seoul people have pains because of conservative diseases such as atopy, splenitis, chest complaint etc. I have had atopy since I was 12 years old. This disease has not been healed until now, but when I go to rural areas and the countryside, the atopy could be better and less itchy on the skin. People suffer from atmospheric pollution; “Atopy, which has recently become widespread at a rapid pace around the world, is triggered by allergens in the air or in food” (Kim, 2006, para.2). Current medical technology cannot heal those diseases, which are prevented by fresh and clean air. Bae (2007) writes, “Korean government will also tighten regulation eco-health policy, which aims to curb children’s health problems due to pollution, such as atopy” (para.2). Biofuels offer many environmental advantages when we compare them with fossil fuels. The greenhouse gas emissions of biofuels are up to two thirds less than those of fossil fuels according to Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) (Travers, 2007). John Travers said, “These reductions result in a cleaner environment and help countries meet their Kyoto obligations” (2007, para.5). Biofuel can help sufferers to decrease their pains or cure their problems in Seoul and any other rural areas.

Second, biofuel should give Korea a big competitive edge to improve its economy. Korea earns dollars through exports to the U.S.A, Europe, China, Japan and any other countries. Especially in trade, Korean’s most important countires are America and Europe. However, Europe has built up regulations to import goods, which should be related with friendly environmental factors. Kanter states, “A fierce debate is unfolding about whether industry and European economy can afford higher commitments to pollution-reduction targets” (2007, para.7). For example, if goods are produced through an eco-friendly process, it can be charged less custom duty and have a reduction of tax. That is a big advantage when we compete with other companies and local firms. Europe approves biofuels as eco-friendly fuel and they try to use the biofuel for their major gas. The EU environment commissioner said that they try to improve 10 per cent of its transport fuel from biofuels (Conner, 2008). Biofuel can improve the Korean economy and give Korean companies a competitive advantage.

Finally, biofuel can develop Korean technology to be eco-friendly. Most developed countries prefer eco-friendly technologies, and that is the biggest trend in the world; “Europeans manufacturers have spent far longer working to make their products safer and less hazardous to the environment” (Kaplan, 2007, para.1). In the future Korea will not be able to sell goods if they are not made with an eco-friendly process. Many countries are trying to get advanced environmental technologies, and that will give them big money for the future. Korean’s future economy is engaged in technology because now Korean economic power is high technology, which covers our weakness in lack of natural resources, expensive labor, and small land. Most of the advanced countries study it very hard, and Korea also must catch up in environmental technology with biofuel.

My opponents say biofuel might make new food security risks. Siwa Msangi said, “Strong international policies are needed to stop the biofuel production revolution threatening food security for the poor” (2007, para.1). However, they are wrong, because fuel prices have hit an all time high, and influence food prices. John Travers said, “A recent study by consulting group LECG found that rising energy prices have twice the impact on the consumer price index for food than the price of feedstock used for ethanol” (2007, para.9). Next generation biofuels, which are cellulosic content and algae, are not related with food as wood and grass are. These sources are more efficient and low cost (Travers, 2007). Most of agriculture uses machines, which need fuels. Fuel cost is also a big part of expense for agriculture.

In conclusion, now biofuel technology takes in the advanced technology trend and European countries have started to use biofuel for their transport fuels. Koreans also should try to join in the trend, and that can solve our environmental, economic, and technological problems. Korea needs biofuels technology for our future.

Why using biofuel makes good sense.

Why using biofuel makes good sense.

In the title article “Why using biofuel makes good sense” by John Travers, he said that biofuels helps the economy and the environment which biofuel is the best near-term solution to solve problems of. Biofuel has two types of gas, which are bioethanol and biodiesel. Biofuels cause gas carbon emission two thirds less than fossil fuels, according to Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI). Rural economies can be improved by the biofuel industry and it can give us better values. Ireland can balance between supply and demand when they use biofuels. Energy problem cause for rising food price more than using food to make biofuels. Ireland has sufficient land to make biofuel. Ireland can have a developed technology for the biofuel industry and the technology can improve economic and environmental benefits through biofuels.

I agree that biofuel makes sense in that it improves our economy, develops our technologies, protects our environment, and solves social problems. Especially, my country Korea needs to have biofuel technology for our environment, economy, and technology. Biofuel technology can cure our problems of economic slump can be our competitive advantages.

First, environmental pollution, which is a kind of big problem in Korea, can be solved by biofuels. Especially, air pollution is the biggest problem in Seoul, the Korean capital. Many Seoul people take pains because of conservative diseases such as atopy, splenitis, chest complaint etc. People suffer from atmospheric pollution. Most of the advanced countries study it very hard, and Korea also must catch up in environmental technology with biofuels.

In conclusion, now biofuel technology takes in the advanced technology trend and European countries have stared to use biofuel for their transport fuels. Korean also should try to join in the general trend and that can solve our environmental, economic, and technological problems. Korean needs biofuels technology for our future.

Biofuel can help to solve fuel problems.

Biofuel can help to solve fuel problems.

In the article “Can biofuels help prevent global warming, or will it only make matters worse?” by Connor, he said that biofuel has both benefits and problems to be our future fuel. The European Union has a thought to improve using the biofuel for transportation fuel. The biofuel is the same as oil, in that it makes carbon dioxide, but plants have absorbed carbon dioxide from air that is a good balance. When we make biofuel by corn and any other plants, we can reduce greenhouse gases and have replacement fuel form nature. However, biofuel can destroy rainforest and increase food cost, which does not serve us benefits everywhere in the world.

Biofuel is two birds, one stone for our future. That can give us many benefits when we predict our future. Urban people might go back to their hometown, which is rural. A less developed country can start a new industry, which will not harm our earth. Biofuel helps to prevent the greenhouse problem. Biofuel not only can help people but also nature, by boing our ideal fuel.

First, biofuel can spread our population from concentration in urban areas. Urbanization is a sort of big problem in our society. Many experts and government officers try to solve this problem, but that is not easy. Many people come to the city because they can earn a lot of money and get a chance to build up their better life. Fuel industry is the biggest industry in the world. If this huge industry goes to the rural area, many people will also go out of the urban area to earn money. Naturally, urbanization is solved by the energy problems. That is the best way to solve two big problems.

Second, many less developed countries can get huge money through the fuel industry. Now, many developing countries build up factories to earn dollars from overseas. However, it produces pollution and affects the earth badly. Most of the less developed countries are in tropical areas and they can grow crops very well. They can earn money to export biofuel. Unbalanced wealth of the world can be solved through biofuel if we use biofuel instead of oil.

Finally, biofuel helps prevent global warming. Now, the North Pole is melting because of greenhouse. An unusual change of weather and a natural disasters happen through greenhouse and pollution that is caused by a lot of factories and carbon dioxide. However, plants absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. Biofuel can clean air and prevent global warming.

In conclusion, our lives should believe with nature if we want to be healthy and have a good life. Nature is not human’s things and we just share nature with other species. Biofuel can help us to solve our world problems such as urbanization, world unbalanced wealth, and global warming. Biofuel is the best way to live together with other species and we can inherit this treasure to our descendants and the next generation.

A global crisis

In the article ”Oil: a global crisis” by John Murray, he said that oil price is increasing after the Iraq war and oil price soar will be continued. Now, oil price has been increasing by a third of the record $135 a barrel that has multiplied six-times since 2002. Oil production is decreasing because of a peak of the oil amounts. Before the Iraq war, Hussein offered to U.S to decide to open 10 new giant oil fields. However, U.S and U.K occupied Iraq by war, and then Iraq oil production changed from 3.5 million to two million barrels per day. Demand of oil is increasing, but the oil is limited and peaked. The expert has three views of the predictions for oil price such as collapse, moderate, and soars. The soaring of the oil price is a possible prospect.

Now, I will discuss about the fact that the U.S decision to occupy Iraq was not a long-range plan. U.S.A and developed countries should concentrate on development of efficient engines new alternative fuels. It is true that the oil is going to be gone. We need to find new energy to replace old resources before the real energy crisis comes.

First, we have to find more efficient engines. Efficient engine technologies give us many benefits. We can save oil and money that are used to improve other development of industries and welfare. If our efficient technology is improved, our technology industry can be developed. Efficient technology gives companies big money and good marketing performance. For example, after developing hybrid engines, Toyota earned a lot of money and big market shares, and impressed consumers that they are a good company to think about our earth and future. We need to improve efficient engines before perfecting alternative fuels.

Finally, we have to invest to find new energies. Now our scientists found some for the alternative energies such as new clear power, solar power, wind power, biodiesel, and hydrogen. Those energies were found, but we less efficient than oil energy. Especially, I am interested in biodiesel. That is a really good resource to get energy, because the energy does not destroy nature and helps to clean the earth. If we farm crops to make energy, it makes new jobs and many people come back to their hometowns. This system helps to spread populations all over the world and gives farmers big money that can develop agriculture. We need to have new energies with conservation of the nature. That will be our future treasure and the most important resources for our civilization.

In conclusion, now we have a big problem, which is a crisis of the energy. However, although many people know that oil will be gone, they did not abandon digging land, because oil provides for some rich people who just think about earning huge money. They do not consider the future of the energy crisis. We have to find efficient engines, which help to delay the peak of oil and develop our technology before we find new resources of energy. Then, we have to find alternative energy for our future. Particularly, the biodiesel is a good kind of alternative energy that can protect our nature and serve energy. Now is the time to find new energy with conservation of nature, because we know that the oil price is increasing and that is not easy.

High oil price changes our life

High oil price changes our life

Our life can be changed after the oil increases. First, food price can be increasing, because modern agriculture grows crops with machines. The machines are impacted by the oil price and the crop price also can be increased. Second our economy can be in recession. People have to spend money to buy gas instead of buying other stuff such as clothes, shoes, and foods outside the house, etc. They do not wan to go out and hang out with their friends, because it requires money in modern life. Finally, people do want to travel out of the country or domestically. When oil price increases, airplane ticket prices are increased. Many people should be scared to go to travel by car that requires gas. All of the goods’ and services’ prices can be increased. However, the salary is not increased because oil price is increasing immediately. The biggest problem is that of poor people, who have a tough life because they are very sensitive to price of the goods. We need solutions to solve the problems for the people and our good life.
